The bad news: it’s a diesel, which means it probably won’t make it to the States. But it’s interesting on a couple of fronts…
“The performance of our new LR-TDV8 can only be described as awe-inspiring,” said Paul Walker, Land Rover chief programmer engineer. “We are confident that the combination of reduced CO2 emissions, EU5 compliance and the massive increase in performance while delivering a huge improvement in fuel economy, is world class.”
The new 8-speed, 4.4 liter diesel powers the new Range Rover from 0-60 in just 7.5 seconds and it STILL gets over 30 miles to the gallon. It’s good for 308 hp and a massive 516 lb-ft of torque. To bring it back from 60-0, it is equipped with the same Brembo-based braking system fitted to the 5.0-litre LR-V8 supercharged model.
It’s officially listed as getting 30.1 mpg in combined city/highway driving, which makes you wonder if 30 was the magic number and once they managed to eke it out they left their drawing boards and went to the pub. The exterior designers were probably already there, adding only what they call Jupiter grilles and side vents for the diesel models and calling it a day. To be fair, though, they also provide a new Exterior Design Pack option which includes a revised front bumper with fog lamp surrounds, front grille and side vents in Titan finish, revised side sills, rear bumper and stainless steel exhaust finishers. And they did come up with two new color options: Fuji White and Baltic Blue. Probably had to work extra hard on those names.
If all this sounds a little bitter it’s only because, as noted above, we’re not likely to see any of these in the States, which is a crying shame. The jump from 3.6 liters to 4.4 liters is pretty significant, especially considering all that added efficiency.
Ah well. Maybe someday…
