If you’ve got a couple of billion dollars lying around, you’re impatient, and you’ve got 83,000 millionaires in your backyard, you might be thinking what Ratan Tata, the 71-year-old chairman of Tata Sons Ltd in India is thinking: the Land Rover-Jaguar portfolio looks pretty solid.

Details of product changes for the 2007 Discovery 3 / LR3 model have been announced by Land Rover. This will be a short production year, and more significant changes will follow in 2008.

Can you imagine…a Land Rover the size of a MINI? That’s this year’s teaser from the Frankfurt Auto Show in what has become a Land Rover “tradition” of teasing audiences with a future concept.

Evidently, the looks of the new Range Rover Sport were so well received that Land Rover decided to apply them to the LR2. This, the latest Land Rover model variation, will feature body-colored bumpers and side-sills, a rear spoiler, titanium door handles and 19-inch alloy wheels. Perfect for those who can’t – or won’t – pony up for the Sport model but still want that dynamic street look.

Could this be the ultimate luxury? A Land Rover LR3 that requires no driver? Actually, the LR3 was the chosen vehicle at MIT for its entry into this year’s DARPA Urban Challenge, a competition run by the central research and development organization of the Department of Defense where all of the entries are required to run a course “without human help”.

Speculation throughout the auto industry continues to ebb and flow it seems with each passing week. The big question: is Ford planning to sell off Land Rover and Jaguar – and even perhaps Volvo – in an effort to recapture some much needed capital?
