The Bollinger B1 all-electric SUV is due to be launched in mid-2019. Earlier this month, the start-up firm Bollinger Motors, based in Hobart in upstate New York, is in the final stages of developing its new B1 SUV. In the few months since we first learned about the Defender-esque B1, some details have emerged, along with a few videos showing the vehicle in testing off-road and even out on the track.
The all-wheel-drive B1 claims 355bhp and 472lb ft of torque, delivered through two electric motors. Electronic locking differentials front and rear keep the car moving over difficult terrain, while twin two-speed range gearboxes control the torque.
The standard specification will include a 60kWh battery, good for about 120 miles. An optional 100kWh battery bumps the range up to 200 miles.
Bollinger engineer John Hutchinson said: “There’s no other electric SUV like this. Electric drivetrains are great for off-road use because they offer plenty of torque at low RPM. The B1 is designed for fun off-roading, or for use as a farm vehicle. Those vehicles don’t travel great distances, so range is less of an issue.”
The machine's stripped-down design features aluminum chassis and panels, simply designed to make it easy to manufacture, and simple to repair and replace panels. All models will feature a steel roll-over cage. The B1 sports 15.5 inches of ground clearance with 10 inches of wheel travel. It is 12 1/2 feet long and 76 inches wide, with a wheelbase of 105 inches.
Industrial designer Robert Bollinger founded the company 2014. They now employ ten people and claim to have received 10,000 expressions of interest since the project was first announced.
