Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is undertaking a £200 million redevelopment of its primary design and engineering facility in Gaydon, Warwickshire. JLR has announced that construction has now begun for the expansion project, the first of its kind at a non-manufacturing JLR site for over a decade.
The updates to the site are intended to further JLR’s global ambitions. A JLR spokesperson was quoted, “The new design and engineering center is a testament both to Jaguar Land Rover’s British heritage of innovation and its compelling vision for future vehicle technology. The new space will centralize our design, product engineering and purchasing functions in an original and modern environment, as well as creating additional capacity for the future.”
JLR has literally been on a spending spree of investing in UK manufacturing facilities, including Castle Bromwich, Halewood, and Solihull. All of which has both fed, and been supported by, the success of the firm’s ever-expanding lineup of vehicles, such as the Evoque Convertible and Discovery Sport, along with a plethora of Jag models. It has also built up its international manufacturing operations, including a new manufacturing facility under construction in Slovakia, and a newly opened plant in Brazil. In he past five years JLR doubled its staff from 20,000 people, to more than 40,000. Their investments in product creation and capital expenditure total over £11 billion in that same period of time.
In addition to the Gaydon project, Warwick District Council’s planning committee approved plans for JLR to expand another existing site near Whitley, which could add 4,000 new jobs to the local economy. The new development, known as ‘Whitley South’, will take up over 250 acres of space and will straddle the line between Warwick District and Coventry.
