Jaguar Land Rover has announced yet another stunning development in the works. The 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen uses “transparent” pillars and “ghost car” features to aid urban navigation.
Jaguar Land Rover has announced yet another stunning development in the works. The 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen uses “transparent” pillars and “ghost car” features to aid urban navigation.
A system of on-board cameras will relay images from the vehicle's surroundings, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and approaching vehicles. Those images will be displayed on screens built into the vehicle’s A, B, and C pillars, in order to eliminate blind spots. The display will be triggered by movement of the drivers head and other cues such as steering input or operation of the turn indicators.
In addition to the pillar displays, further images will be projected onto a head-up display on the windscreen in order to draw attention to hazards as they appear in the driver's field of view. To help with navigation, a “ghost car” can be projected onto the head up display for the driver to follow, rather than having to glance away from the road to look at a cue on a GPS screen.
Jaguar Land Rover’s Director of Research and Technology, Dr. Wolfgang Epple, had this to say about the new feature: "Our ultimate aim is to reduce road accidents and enhance the urban driving experience. The Jaguar Land Rover research team is developing this technology to improve visibility and to give the driver with the right information at the right time. If we can keep the driver's eyes on the road ahead and present information in a non-distracting way, we can help drivers make better decisions in the most demanding and congested driving environments."
The system will also be able to connect the vehicle to the cloud, enabling it to provide the driver with information about nearby services and attractions. No information has yet been provided as to when the new system will become available on production vehicles.
