Land Rover Builds a Hideout for Santa

Land Rover's St. Nick Hideaway

21 years ago, when I bought my first Land Rover, it wasn’t lost on me that it would add a whole new dimension of enjoyment to my Winter activities. Anyone who has driven a Land Rover in snowy conditions knows that they are enormously well suited to the task. I grew up in the Northeast US, and my first car was a mid 70’s rear wheel drive Pontiac. “Teeth cut” in that fashion, I have always been comfortable driving in the snow, and usually enjoy it. Having Land Rovers to play with just adds an extra layer of magic to the whole experience. I’m quite sure that I am not alone in that perspective.

It’s no surprise then that Land Rover HQ has tried to capture some of that rare essence and sprinkle it over top of their new baby, The Discovery Sport. In their most recent promo video, the baby Disco is seen getting loaded up with parts and materials to build a nice little weatherproof cabin next to a remote arctic lake.

Of course once the cabin is built, it has to be stocked with mince pies and other treats for St. Nick. Who will presumably be stopping in for a much needed break on Christmas Eve. All of which, of course, were also hauled in the Discovery Sport’s various storage compartments.

While this may not offer much in the way of proof that the Sport is any match for its larger stable-mates when it comes to getting through the rough stuff, it does do a pretty good job of demonstrating that it can actually haul a pretty hefty payload. Maybe the “Little D” has some real utility, and I don’t mean just for groceries and the school run.

Lately I’ve been doing some renovations on our 100+ year-old town home. I have been pleasantly surprised by how much material I can fit into my Range Rover Sport, including some 10-foot long oak boards. Don’t let the slick appearance of late model Land Rovers fool you. Even the newest ones are still capable of earning their keep, wherever they may be. Just be prepared for a higher cleaning bill; I don’t think the Discovery Sport was meant to cleaned out with a garden hose.
