Land Rover used this weekend’s Burghley Horse Trials to debut two Land Rover-sponsored cycle response units (CRUs), the latest component of Rover’s three year global initiative, “Reaching Vulnerable People Around the World.”
The cycle response units will allow Red Cross first aid volunteers to reduce the time it takes to respond to emergencies, particularly at large, public events like the Burghley Horse Trials. Cyclists are equipped with defibrillator, advanced first aid kit and resuscitation equipment. The CRUs demonstrated their effectiveness over the weekend after responding within minutes to a man who had suddenly collapsed. The bicycles were integral to their response time, allowing the group to stabilize the patient before the ambulance arrived.
“The cycles really came into their own when trying to get through the busy crowds at Burghley. Often, we can’t carry all the kit with us on foot but the bikes have everything we need, which is absolutely crucial when you're dealing with a life-threatening incident,’ noted Red Cross volunteer Adam Young.
A total of 26 custom-built bicycles have been donated by Land Rover for use throughout the United Kingdom. The CRU initiative is the most recent collaboration between Land Rover and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) since the beginning of their partnership in August 2010.
