This summer, one lucky Land Rover owner will be getting the phone call of a lifetime – a call telling them they’ve won a trip to space on Virgin Galactic. The Adventure of a Lifetime Sweepstakes gives current Land Rover owners, as well as those who order or take delivery of a new Land Rover this spring, the chance to go to space.
Land Rover and Virgin Galactic have been partners since 2014, when the partnership was launched on the decks of the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier museum in New York City. They have grown the partnership over the years. Land Rovers are used as support vehicles on the ground at Virgin's Spaceport in New Mexico, and those who fly on a Virgin Galactic flight (or, in these early days, are booked to do so) are eligible to buy a special Astronaut Edition Range Rover.
The Sweepstakes is open to current Land Rover owners who live in the USA (though if you live in Ohio or Virginia, for some unknown legal reason you are unfortunately ineligible to enter). You can enter the contest at landroveradventureofalifetime.com until June 20th.
Filling out the form gets you one entry, but you can also create a “Space Team” to refer people to the contest and get extra entries. If your friends subscribe to Land Rover emails, you get one more entry. If they order a new Land Rover before June 20th, you get 50 entries. If they take delivery of a new Land Rover in that period, you get 100 entries. As usual there are all sorts of legal caveats in the fine print.
The winner will be informed in August, and then will start preparing for their journey with Virgin Galactic. At some point, they’ll fly on VSS Unity, crossing the line at 50 miles above sea level that NASA, the FAA, and the US Air Force consider to be “space.”
It’s unclear if the winner will be eligible to buy a Range Rover Astronaut Edition, which is exclusively available to those who have reserved or flown a Virgin Galactic flight (at writing, a $450,000 adventure; the Land Rover sweepstakes prize comes with a $50,000 check to pay the taxes). But Land Rover probably wouldn’t say no if you wanted to put the money down on one.
