Land Rover's Smart Assistant Redefines the Ultimate Driving Experience

Land Rover has long been known as the world leader in the realm of off-road driving experiences. That said, the new crop of Land Rover models have been leading the way in innovative technologies like door-mirror depth finders and virtual reality hood displays. The latest technological advancement from Land Rover equips vehicles with a type of artificial intelligence that learns your driving habits, musical preferences and occupant preferences redefining Land Rover’s trademark Ultimate Driving Experience.

Known officially as the “Smart Assistant” Land Rover’s new onboard system uses the latest in machine learning and artificial intelligence to determine driver behavior. Using an advanced algorithm, the smart assistant integrates with your smart phone reading a variety of variables like your calendar, the time of day, your choice in music and your phone logs. Seat adjustments and climate control will adjust to your preferred settings and can change based on information contained in your calendar. For instance if you’re warm after your gym session and you prefer a cooler cabin temperature, the smart assistant will make the proper adjustment. If you’re running late for an appointment scheduled on your calendar, the vehicle will offer to send an email to coworkers alerting them of the delay. In route driving adjustments are made as well, adjusting fuel efficiency based on driving conditions and patterns. Additional passengers are also detected and settings are adjusted to suit their needs as well. The Smart Assistants level of sophistication is truly astounding.

The Land Rover community of driving enthusiasts need not be concerned about the level of automation provided by the Smart Assistant. Despite an abundance of news teasing the idea of fully automated transportation, Land Rover seems aware of the value that their consumers place on the driving experience.

"By developing a learning function for Adaptive Cruise Control, it is technology concepts like the self-learning car that will ensure any future intelligent car remains fun and rewarding to drive as we move closer to more autonomous driving over the next 10 years," noted Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover. "This is important because in the future customers will still want an emotional connection and a thrilling drive - with the ability to drive autonomously when required."

It looks like the considerable R&D investment made by Jaguar Land Rover is paying off.
