According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some Land Rover Evoques (along with some Jaguar XF Sedans) are being evaluated following reports of injuries to consumers caused by vehicles rolling away while parked.
The NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) received seven reports of rollaways for model year 2012-2014 Land Rover Evoque SUVs and 2013 Jaguar XF cars. An estimated 39,000 vehicles may be affected, according to the report on NHTSA’s website.
A similar rollaway problem has been reported to occur with some Jeep vehicles, resulting in a recall in April of 2016. In June of 2016, noted “Star Trek” actor Anton Yelchin was killed by his own Jeep Grand Cherokee when it unexpectedly rolled away. The vehicle was part of the recall but had not been repaired.
ODI opened a preliminary investigation into the JLR vehicles on December 16, simultaneous to another investigation of the same issue on certain Dodge Ram vehicles. Four injuries have been reported in the JLR incidents, with causes including the vehicle moving while the door is open, and another when a person was pinned against a garage wall. In all seven incidents, the vehicles’ transmissions had reportedly been shifted to park, but none of the cars had their parking brake engaged at the time of the incidents.
The fix for this issue in the April Fiat-Chrysler recall, was for the vehicle to shift into park on its own whenever the door is open.
In addition to the rollaway investigation, a recall has been announced for some 2016 and 17 model year Discovery Sport and Evoque models.
Apparently there is an issue with the front lower control arms separating from the knuckles. That certainly does sound dangerous.
As with all recalls, the manufacturer will bear the cost of the necessary repairs, through the dealership network. Dealers will replace the hardware that connects the front lower control arm to the knuckle for free.
Affected vehicles are as follows: (220 vehicles in total)
2016-17 Land Rover Discovery Sport SUVs manufactured between May 30 and Aug. 24, 2016;
2016-17 Range Rover Evoque SUVs manufactured between June 7 and Aug. 26, 2016.
