Tata Motors has officially funded “Project Icon” to start work on a replacement for the “iconic” Defender. After 62 years, it’s about time…
This is how it all began. Note the central driving position!
So now the heavy lifting begins. Land Rover has to figure out how to replace the Land Rover’s Land Rover – the legendary Defender – with a new go-anywhere vehicle that will undoubtedly become the company’s new flagship for decades to come.
Will it carry the company’s T5 steel platform chassis or will that be jettisoned in favor of something lighter and more Earth-friendly?
Will it include Land Rover’s Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) technology as seen in the LR2 in 2008 to help improve emissions or something else new and exciting?
What will it look like? Will it boast the same shoulders and in-your-face grille or will it be sleeker like the new LRX.
And lastly, how will it be positioned? The LRX, while certainly cool looking, has muddied the waters for Land Rover a bit in terms of where the company is going with the brand’s line-up. Will the new Defender recapture the firm’s safari-friendly image or will it be a kinder, gentler sort of approach?
We’ll see. It’s due for launch in 2014.
