Land Rover has just released images and details for the 2012 Defender, including the announcement of a new Euro V diesel engine.
A smaller, 2.2-liter turbo diesel will replace the current Defender’s 2.4 liter, Euro IV offering. The Euro V engine will help the Defender’s fuel economy and reduce harmful emissions (sorry U.S., we need to wait for a Euro VI engine). Fortunately, these changes do not compromise The Defender’s performance. The new Defender engine will match its predecessor’s power output producing 122PS at 3,500rpm with ample torque, 360Nm (265.5 lb-ft) at 2,000rpm. What’s more, Land Rover has replaced the old engine splash cover with a new, full-acoustic cover designed to reduce engine noise, adding a touch of refinement to the rugged Rover.
Those seeking additional refinement (on a Defender?!) and features will be pleased to see a new range of option packs available for the Defender:
We are encouraged by the subtle changes Land Rover has made to The Defender. Luxury options like leather, A/C, a cd player, etc. may “soften” the Defender enough to attract new buyers without compromising the integrity of the brand. Let’s hope a similar approach is adopted for the all-new 2013 model debuting at Frankfurt…
