It’s also not that much more expensive to get into a PHEV than it is to get a regular Range Rover. The base price of the cheapest straight-six mild-hybrid gas motor is $101,000; the PHEV starts at $104,900, plus destination charges. The PHEV also comes with a 3.0-liter straight six, but adds a 38.2kWh battery pack that offers about 48 miles of electric-only range. Testing actually showed a range of 70 miles, but Land Rover is going with a real-world range of 54 miles.
The Range Rover Extended-Range PHEV (there's no other range available, but it's not a Land Rover if the name of the model isn't excessively long!) is also one of only two plug-in hybrids to offer fast charging, with a 50kW fast charge capacity. The only other PHEV that has fast charging is the rather more pedestrian Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, so it gives the Range Rover more or less an exclusive feature in its market segment. According to Land Rover, the Range Rover can charge more than 80% in less than an hour at a fast charger, which opens up massive possibilities for electric-only driving, depending on how you structured your driving day.
The PHEV Range Rover only seems to be available right now in the short wheelbase Range Rover – not the new Seven Seats Long Wheelbase, or the luxury four-seater LWB that carried over from the fourth generation model. Per the online configuration wizard, it also only seems available on the base SE model, not the higher-level Autobiography.
If you’re looking for a PHEV, and looking to drop money on a luxury model, the Range Rover is an honestly compelling case. The range is some of the best for any PHEV on the current market, very close to the class-leading Polestar 1, a sleek sports car made by a Volvo companion brand that gets 77 miles. To get 72 out of a Range Rover that otherwise looks like a normal Range Rover is quite a plus. The fast charging means that if you can park it by a fast charger for an hour, you can do a round-trip journey of around 80 miles without switching to the gas motor. For those who drive shorter distances on a day to day basis, this range and a home charger means a minimal gas bill on a traditionally-pricey-to-run Range Rover.
There’s more to come too, with Land Rover planning a fully-EV Range Rover for model year 2024, thus making the same flagship luxury car available with everything from a gnarly twin-turbo V8 to a earth-loving all battery setup. With Land Rover also leaning into hydrogen power, and with the fifth-generation model at the very beginning of its run, there could be a Range Rover powertrain for everyone the next few years.
