This is going to be a life saver. Marshall Land Systems has developed a remote control driving system for a standard issue long-wheelbase Land Rover military vehicle that can be driven in areas where putting crew inside is not safe. It can be used to carry a variety of sensors or loads for reconnaissance or other sensitive operations while keeping soldiers’ lives safely out of harm’s way.
The really neat thing about this “drone” is how you drive it: the controls are managed by a series of servo motors and mechanical devices which turn the steering wheel or push on the pedals. The driver – sitting in his remote location – has all the controls, steering wheel and instruments in front of him just as he would if he were sitting in the vehicle itself. He views a screen with a real time image of the view from the driver’s position and in this way drives the vehicle in the direction and at the speed he wishes to go.
Plus, in keeping with Land Rover’s long-standing tradition of being efficiently re-dressed in the field, the equipment can be removed or installed in less than 30 minutes so it can be converted back to a standard vehicle at any time.
