The Range Rover Evoque has been selling at alarming rate – more than 90,000 units worldwide since its launch last year. Therefore, it’s not surprising to learn that Land Rover may be looking to expand on this success by launching a smaller, subcompact version of the Evoque.
Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and creative mind behind the Evoque left the door open when asked about the possibility of a smaller Evoque. “Certainly, I think we can go smaller…In a world focusing on sustainability you could argue that smaller and lighter is the way to go." If Land Rover decides to move forward on the subcompact Evoque it will be enter a competitive marketplace currently occupied by the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1, MINI Countryman S, and to a lesser extent its own LR2.
The Land Rover LR2 is currently the least expensive vehicle in the brand’s lineup at just over $37,000; will a smaller, entry-level Evoque cannibalize future LR2 sales? After all, the 2013 LR2 will feature the same 2.0 liter, 240hp found in the Evoque, an engine that will likely find its way in some model of the subcompact Evoque.
The success of the Evoque has earned Land Rover the benefit of the doubt when it comes to new models – we’re just not sure how this vehicle can be made much smaller!
