Land Rover’s managing director, Phil Popham, said: "A 2WD option is just one way in which we are developing our vehicles' efficiency whilst adding to the Land Rover range and expanding our appeal to a broader group of customers. We will continue to make the 'world's finest all-terrain vehicles' for those customers who require 4WD but will also now offer an alternative."
First of all, nobody says “whilst” anymore. That went out with Queen Victoria. And second, there’s something equally egregious about the idea of a two-wheel drive Land Rover. The time’s they are a’changin’.
The new 2.2 liter turbo diesel manages to squeak out over 47 mpg ‘whilst’ emitting only 158g/km of CO2. The current model does 42 mpg and 179g/km. But, the current model also has four-wheel drive. Outside you’ll see a few minor facelifts and it will get Stop/Start technology for the manual version.
And, being a diesel, it won’t see America’s shores. But, at just two-wheel drive, do we really want it anyway?
