Cue up the ongoing saga that started with ever-increasing thefts of Defender doors, bonnets, and other parts, leading up to the theft of same from a police defender parked at a police station in Leicestershire back in August. In this latest incident, vandals in West Yorkshire have painted an entire police 110 in metallic silver, including the windows and front screen.
While the perpetrators are probably in stitches over their prank, the repair of the vehicle will probably be paid for with public funds, so it really hurts everyone. As with the purloined-panel 110 from Leicestershire, the police in West Yorkshire use theirs to service parts of the community that can be difficult to reach certain times of the year. The smaller departments may only have the one Defender, and in a case like this, the police may have trouble responding to call from certain parts. Says police Inspector John Simpson, while some "might find this funny," the vehicle would "be off the road whilst it is repaired at a cost. It is a specialist vehicle used to access the more rural areas of Calderdale and as such is an essential vehicle for the local communities.”
