Two weeks ago we reported on a custom Defender that was fitted with a V8 LS3 short block engine. It appears that the aftermarket Defender market is booming, as this week features a new story about a shop specializing in custom Defender rebuilds.
Matt Pearlman of West Coast Defenders in Los Angeles has made Land Rover Defender rebuilds his business, sourcing and modifying the classic vehicles to meet the demands of an affluent marketplace in search of a rugged vehicle with modern technologies. The Defender is known the world over for its utilitarian DNA, long used as a farm or military vehicle, its unparalleled capabilities and durability have made it popular among auto enthusiasts looking for a truly authentic vehicle.
Given that most collectors have no need for a safari-ready 4x4, Pearlman serves the community by providing modern amenities like power windows, locks, LED lights, custom paint jobs, upgraded suspension and navigation system to make the Defender better suited to urban driving. In fact, Pearlman will build a Defender to whatever specifications the customer desires. “Our main goal is to keep them authentic as possible while bringing them into the 21st century,” says Pearlman.
