High-performance camp kitchen products and increasing consumer interest in Overlanding contribute to Atlantic British’s record growth


CLIFTON PARK, NY (Aug. 19, 2020) – Atlantic British Ltd., the largest independent supplier of Land Rover parts and accessories, has expanded its product offerings to include premium, high-performance, feature-laden camp kitchen essentials, applicable to any vehicle brand. This includes products from premier manufacturers Clearview, for whom Atlantic British is the exclusive North American distributor, and ARB, which offers some products in the U.S. only through Atlantic British. New products for kitchen suites include fridge/freezer combos and slides to give easy access to them, cutlery, water cans, tables, chairs and protective awnings.

The late 1990s would be the final days of the iconic Land Rover-based Camel Trophy, the end of a glorious 18-year partnership. The 1996 event would become considered the final traditional event, with the 1997 and 1998 events drifting further and further from the traditional convoy format. Finally, in 1999, Land Rover would end its involvement with the event. There would be a final event, a boat-based event in the South Pacific in 2000. Then, it was all over.

When Ireland’s South East Mountain Rescue (SEMRA) got a grant for a new vehicle in 2017, they found themselves in a bit of a quandary. Their trusty Defender 110 was up for replacement. But Land Rover had discontinued the Defender in 2016, and the replacement was still a few years out. They wanted to stick with a Land Rover product, though –all the rescuers had come to trust them over the years, and they weren’t much into switching to another brand. There was only one other option in their price range – the Discovery 5.

After several years of discussion, Ineos has released the design of their Grenadier, an all-new 4x4 designed to be a spiritual successor to the classical Defender. Created by Land Rover fanatic Jim Ratcliffe, the Grenadier is designed to fill the gap in the market created by the transition of the Defender from ladder frame and solid axles to a unibody, independent suspension vehicle.

In 1989, Land Rover released the Discovery. Based on the Range Rover Classic platform, the Discovery would define Land Rover's success in the 1990s. It would also define the balance of the Camel Trophy event, with Discovery taking the mantle of team vehicle from Defenders starting with the 1990 event. With the exception of the final Camel Trophy in 1998, the Discovery would define the rest of the event's life.

From 1993-1995, Camel Trophy would see what some considered the last gasp of its glory years. The event was still solidly focused on the 4x4 expedition, using Land Rover Discoverys. This period would take the event on some of its first multi-national adventures as well. However, the seeds were being sown for the final events, where the focus on off-road driving would be heavily reduced.

The late 1980s would be a sort of "Glory Years" for the Camel Trophy, hosting some of the most iconic iterations of the event. With the Camel Trophy now an extremely popular global event, it also drew better and better teams. Many of the participants in these years would go on to have major roles in the off-road and Land Rover community. It would also feature the only British win ever in the 1989 event, a win for which the victors remain celebrated 31 years later.
