It should come as no surprise that Jaguar Land Rover has reaffirmed its ownership of the trademarked Defender name.

According to sources, JLR has applied to renew its ownership of the Defender name in Europe as well as in other parts of the world.

(The Atlantic British "On the Road" Discovery 2, and its pilot and captain Eric “extension 231” Riston, are off on another adventure. This time they’re off exploring the wilds of west central New Jersey.)

For those that don't know, New Jersey has far more to see and do than you will see in reruns of “Jersey Shore.” This weekend’s adventure had me leaving home on Thursday with my daughter riding shotgun, and my camp trailer in tow. The drive to the event was fairly unadventurous; some traffic and a GPS blunder but we arrived with little issue. The minute we arrived, my daughter was off to play with the other kids, leaving me free to get the trailer set up. Shortly after setting everything up, the first of several rains arrived.

The recently renovated Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles displayed a unique art car once owned by renowned graffiti artist-turned New York art scene wunderkind and symbol of the 1980’s AIDS crisis, Keith Haring. The car in question is a Land Rover Series IIa 109 Station Wagon that Haring owned and decorated with his trademark cartoon figures. Until now, the vehicle has never before been publicly displayed, although it can be glimpsed in the Haring documentary, "The Universe of Keith Haring."

Jaguar's 5.0 liter supercharged V8 as used in the current line of Range Rover Full Size and Range Rover Sport models has a lot going for it. The power available is beyond reckoning, and the sweet sound coming from the twin pipes is soothing enough to put any baby to sleep. Well, maybe not. But they do sound terrific.

In June of this year it was our privilege to attend the Ottawa Valley Land Rovers' 33rd Annual Birthday Party event. The event is held in Southern Ontario near the town of Maberly, located in an area known as the Mississippi Valley. The area is mostly rural, consisting of small towns interspersed with hills, forests, wetlands and over 250 lakes. Rumor has it that the hills in this part of Ontario were once mountains that dwarfed even the Himalayas. Whether or not that is true, the many exposed granite boulders, shelves and outcroppings contribute both to the scenery and also to the fun that can be had on the local 4x4 trails.

On July 11th 2016, The UK’s Sunday Times reported that Land Rover was in talks with billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, who was hoping to finance a resurrection of the Defender. There was much speculation in the media over how the scheme would be carried out. Ratcliffe is the owner of a UK chemical company called Ineos, with a net worth of about $4.15 billion. Automotive blogs and web forums were alive with hope that it was true. A week later, reports came in that word from JLR was, “No-go.”

Welcome back once again for our fourth-and-final installment of “On the Road” with Atlantic British. Atlantic British sales associate Eric Riston (extension 231) is leading a group of fellow off-road enthusiasts on a cross-country road trip to Moab, Utah, and back.

When we left off, the convoy was making its way back to the East Coast, visiting kitschy roadside attractions such as Cadillac Ranch, and resisting the temptation to eat Texas-sized steaks. They were pushing the trucks hard, running late, and generally travelling on the brink of disaster.

It's official - the “Brexit” referendum has passed in Britain and the country is now poised to leave European Union. An unnamed Jaguar Land Rover spokesperson had indicated prior that, if Britain does leave the EU, the automaker stands to potentially lose over a billion pounds in profits by the end of this decade.

JLR is Britain's biggest carmaker. According to the source, internal documents produced by JLR chief economist David Rea estimate that s the firm’s annual profit could, in the worst of several scenarios, decline by 1 billion pounds ($1.47 billion) by the end of the decade if Britain leaves the European Union.

More on the ongoing saga of JLR’s lawsuit against Chinese automaker Jiangling Motors, for its alleged copying of the Range Rover Evoque.

Jiangling sent its oddly-named Land Wind X7 to market last year, and it was clearly a copy of the Evoque, with a body that was identical in almost every respect.

It seemed like a clear path to victory in what is an obvious case or intellectual property theft. However, Chinese officials have now thrown a wrench into the works by revoking JLR’s patent for the Evoque.

Land Rover put a Discovery Sport to a grueling test earlier this month. In Switzerland, on the 16th of June 2016, the SUV towed three passenger train carriages weighing a total of 108 tons, 6 miles along a railway track. That is effectively the same weight as a Boeing-757 airliner.

Jaguar Land Rover has filed to sue Chinese automaker Jiangling Motors over its “Landwind X7” model, which bears an uncanny resemblance to JLR’s own Land Rover Evoque. The Evoque was already being sold in China when the Landwind styling was revealed. Now, JLR is producing Evoques in China.

There are very few sounds in the world as rich, resonant, and unambiguously enjoyable as those emitted from the tailpipe of a healthy V8-engine Land Rover. In good condition and proper tune, they are truly wonderful vehicles to own and drive. The high seating position and great expanses of glass provide a commanding view of the road. The rugged suspension and drivetrain can tackle almost any terrain or surface condition, and the luxurious interiors (errr, Defenders excepted) keep one comfortable and focused on arriving safely at one’s destination. Land Rover styling is timeless; they retain their charm, and in many cases, their value, for decades after production has ended. In all, Land Rovers, especially the earlier models, are truly “lifetime” vehicles that can be kept on the road long after warranties have lapsed and their appliance-like contemporaries have been scrapped and recycled. So much so that many of us give them names and speak of them as if they are members of the family.

Welcome back to “On the Road” with Atlantic British. Atlantic British sales associate Eric Riston (extension 231) is leading a group of fellow off-road enthusiasts on a cross-country road trip to Moab, Utah, and back. Along the way they've visited with Land Rover clubs, sampled a variety of tourist destinations, and spent several days off-roading in Utah with Bill Burke of Bill Burke’s 4-Wheeling America and Camel Trophy fame.

Our last installment ended with an awful vibration and chirping coming from under the hood of one of the Discovery 2s on the trip down Long Canyon from the group’s Moab base camp. We now rejoin the adventure as Eric and company attempt to find the cause of the trouble.
